LMFA: Definitions of Divisions and Categories

The following definitions of Divisions and Categories are for the purposes of determining eligibility for nomination in the Light My Fire Awards. The LMFA Committee reserves the right to invalidate any nominations that do not match the criteria of the divisions and categories as set forth below.

Class: Sentinel Fanfiction

Stories based on and utilizing characters and concepts from the TV show, The Sentinel.

Divisions

Gen
Content may be rated from G to NC-17.
Stories having elements of male/female romantic or explicit sexual relationships will be considered under this division.

Slash
Stories having elements of same-sex romantic or explicit sexual relationship.
Content may be rated from G to NC-17.
Stories involving multipartner relationships will be considered under this division.

Categories (grouped by type)

Drama
Angst (Rollercoaster Award)
Story or series where emotional distress or upheaval on the part of the character(s) is a central plot element.
Case & Action Adventure (Major Crime Award)
Story or series with crime investigation or other challenging (often dangerous) situations as a central plot element.
Dark Fic/Horror (David Lash Award)
Story or series with an overall dark tone and premise (i.e., death, partner betrayal, graphic rape or torture), usually with a dark ending. Or, story or series with elements of extreme or intense menace, often with supernatural occurrences, that affect the characters in a personally terrifying manner.
Other Flavors
AU (Different Worlds Award)
Story or series where the premise diverges from canon in major and pivotal ways. This can include changing or ignoring major canon events or major aspects of canon reality, alternate time or place settings, different backgrounds and occupations for the characters, divergent physical realities (i.e., Mpreg), etc.
Crossover (Foreign Exchange Award)
Story or series where the Sentinel characters interact with the characters or universe of another fandom.
Humor (Warped Sense Award)
Story or series that is intentionally comical, meant to amuse, or otherwise employs humor as a principal story-telling technique.
Canon-Based
Episode Related (Whole Truth Award)
Story or series that relies on elements of a specific episode, further developing the events in a manner not contradicting canon, or supplements the episode by providing missing scenes or epilogues.
Post-TSbyBS (Brass Ring Award)
Story or series relating to events that take place following the series finale.
Story Elements
Use of Sentinel & Guide (Chopec Award)
Story or series that focuses on exploring and developing the special dynamic between the Sentinel and Guide, often with references to Sentinel/Guide mysticism, or showing them with special abilities beyond that developed in canon.
Use of Canon Character(s) Other than J&B (Usual Suspects Award)
Story or series that makes interesting and memorable use of canon characters other than Jim and Blair.
Use of Original Character(s) (Unusual Suspects Award)
Story or series with interesting and memorable character(s) created by the author.
Relationship Themes
Day in the Life Story (Loft Stories Award)
Story or series focusing on ordinary events in the life of the characters, including daily routine, minor random and inconsequential occurrences, and celebrations of holidays and other special occasions, usually with emphasis on the affection and joy afforded by the characters' relationship to each other.
Hurt / Comfort (Frozen Peas Award)
Story or series in which one character experiences physical or emotional trauma and is assisted in their recovery by another.
Smarm (It's About Friendship Award) gen only
Story or series featuring close and caring relationship between friends.
Non-J/B Pairing (Neighborhood Watch Award)
Story or series where the central focus is on romantic or sexual relationships other than that between Jim and Blair -- i.e., Jim/other, Blair/other, other/other, including m/f pairings.
Slash-Specific Relationship Themes
Pre-Slash/First Time (Clue Bus Award)
Story or series where at least one character is shown as having romantic or sexual feelings toward another character of the same sex, but said feelings aren't acted upon or declared to the other party. Or, story or series where the characters first enter into a romantic or sexual relationship with each other.
Established Relationship (Old Married Award)
Story or series in which Jim and Blair are depicted in a romantic relationship which existed prior to the beginning of the story.
PWP (Plot? What Plot?) (Hot in Cascade Award)
Story or series primary focused on sexual encounters.
Multipartner & Kink (Extra Sensual Pleasures Award)
Story or series involving multipartner relationships or sexual encounters, or which includes sexual practices commonly regarded as "kinky" (sex toys, bondage, S&M, D/S, sexual role playing, etc.).
Story
(Note: Stories whose length place them in the borderline between story size categories will be considered in the category preferred by the author. If a story is nominated in the wrong length category, the committee will move the nomination to the correct length category)
Short Story: 0 - 60k in size when converted to a text file.
Long Story: 60 - 200k in size when converted to a text file.
Novel: 200k and above when converted to a text file.
Series: Two or more interconnected or sequential stories.
Collaboration: Story or series written by two or more authors working together.
Author
New Author: An author who first posted Sentinel fanfiction on the Internet on or after January 1, 2007.
Classic Author: An author who first posted Sentinel fanfiction on the Internet on or before December 31, 2006.
Outstanding Author: An author whose works constitute an outstanding contribution to Sentinel fanfiction.

Class: Sentinel Art

Artwork based on and utilizing characters and concepts from the TV show, The Sentinel.

Divisions

Gen
Works in this division may not depict any romantic relationships, erotic or sexual material.

Romantic or Erotic
Works containing elements of romantic heterosexual, homosexual or multipartner relationships.

Categories

Freehand Art
Sentinel-related artwork that has been created by hand without the assistance of a computer graphics package, and that has been scanned and made available online.
Computer-Generated Art
Sentinel-related artwork that has been created with the aid of a computer graphics package (e.g. photomanips, etc).
Best Overall
Sentinel-related artwork, either freehand or computer generated, can be nominated in this category.
Songvid (Gen, Het, or Slash)
A video that uses music to enhance scenes from The Sentinel to interpret the spirit of the show or present certain aspects of the show in a different light.

Committee Award

The LMFA Committee may choose to give out select Committee Awards.

Changes for 2009

For the 2009 LMFA we decided to streamlinine the Awards by merging or eliminating some categories. Below is a list of categories that used to be on the ballot.

Gen Horror: merged with Gen Dark Fic.
Slash Horror: merged with Slash Dark Fic.
Slash First Time: merged with Slash Pre-slash.
Vids: categories reduced to Best Vid.
Artwork: categories reduced to three categories each for Gen and Slash: Best Freehand, Best Computer Generated, Best Overall. The conditions were:

Divisions

Gen
Works in this division may not depict any romantic relationships, erotic or sexual material.

Romantic or Erotic
Works containing elements of romantic heterosexual, homosexual or multipartner relationships.
To be considered for this division, works must not contain any visible genitalia.

Explicit Erotic
Works containing elements of explicit heterosexual, homosexual or multipartner relationships.
Works containing visible genitalia may be considered, but must be accompanied by a notation stating "explicit".

Categories

Freehand Art
Sentinel-related artwork that has been created by hand without the assistance of a computer graphics package, and that has been scanned and made available online.
Computer-Generated Art
Sentinel-related artwork that has been created with the aid of a computer graphics package (e.g. photomanips, etc).
Story Illustration
Sentinel-related artwork that has been created for the specific purpose of accompanying a Sentinel fanfiction story.
Website category eliminated. The conditions were:

Websites based on and utilizing characters and concepts from the TV show, The Sentinel.

Divisions

Design
Sites should be judged on appearance, ease of navigation, ease of use (font sizes/color), quick loading time, and regular maintenance (links working).
A previously winning site that has been significantly redesigned, as determined by the Committee, can again qualify to be nominated. The Committee will require evidence of the old site - perhaps a screenshot or link to an old page online for the duration of the competition. This link will be used by the Committee to so we can confirm that the redesign is sufficient enough to warrant inclusion. It is not to be made public (unless that is a feature of the site being nominated).

Content
Sites should be judged on relevance to TS, variety of links and information available, and quality of content.

Categories

Information/Resource Site
Websites that contain mainly information regarding The Sentinel TV show.
Websites dedicated to actors of The Sentinel.
Websites dedicated to providing Sentinel fanfiction recommendations.
Single or Collaborating Author or Artist
Websites that house the fanfiction or artwork of a single author/artist or refer to a specific collaboration.
Multiple Authors or Artists
Websites that house the fanfiction or artwork of several authors or artists.
E-zines and virtual seasons are eligible under this category.
Includes archives and websites that house more than one author or artist.
